Junior Citizen Scheme nomination

The Junior Citizen scheme is a local project that is keeping the young people of Barrow safe. It is giving them the tools to enable them to be good citizens and valued members of our communities.

The scheme is a project that has been running for over 25yrs and during this time it has been delivered by a number of key local partners and volunteers. These have included the Police, Fire, CADAS, School Nurses, Age Concern, British Transport Police, Coastguard, Barrow Accident Prevention Committee, North West Water, Furness College, Road Safety Officers and Barrow Borough housing, to name just a few.

The project is in the main organised by Cumbria Fire and rescue and Cumbria Constabulary and is aimed at Yr 6 pupils from every primary school across Furness and every school from Barrow attends the event.

Its aim is to teach pupils personal safety, crime prevention, community safety (anti-social behaviour and criminal damage), drug issues, first aid, internet safety and fire safety through practical scenarios, videos and workshops. These inputs are not only relevant now but can be used throughout the young person’s lives and will hopefully allow them to be good citizens within our communities and keep them safe.

The event runs over a two week period in June and on average between 900 and 1200 young people a year attend!
