Group or Project of the Year 2017 Finalist – The Well

The Well has made it to the finals for the support and facilities for rehabilitation they provide for ex-offenders and other people in need, to help them get their life back on track.

The Well was established by David Higman, after spending much of his younger life in and out of prison, he realised that if there was no-one at the other side of the gate waiting for people with help, support and advice, most released would end up re-offending.

As a Community Interest Company, The Well, based in lba17_group_the-well_resize-for-blogBarrow-in-Furness and around the area,  has three primary services that it provides. These three services are part of a community based rehabilitation approach to recovery, and can be provided independently of each other or as part of a combined package.

They are delivered through a combination of full and part time staff supported by volunteers from the recovery community who are able to provide mutual “peer-support” and experience to empower people to take responsibility for their recovery in order to break the cycles of addiction and/or offending.

The Well believes that abstinent accommodation is a primary ingredient to achieving long term recovery for individuals and works alongside local authorities to create packages that offers a greater number of individuals the opportunity to access  support and treatment. The Well in Barrow now has over 21 beds, all occupied with substance free ex offenders.

In the words of one of thier clients ” Without the Well, I wouldn’t have recognised I was drinking myself to death, because of the help they provided, I am back on track, I can be  a dad to my girls again and now I help others as they come on to the programme, they have literally given me my life back!”
